There is no need to hire a professional for designing your garden in order to give your home a better and fresh look. A beautiful lawn can be easily achieved if people grasp some simple points, which are discussed here:

1- Do not fertilize your lawn repeatedly. This is perhaps one of the biggest mistakes made by novices. Yes, fertilizers are needed for healthy growth of a garden. But, what people don’t know is that lots of fertilizer simply encourages the grass to grow rapidly. In this manner, the glass plants become more vulnerable to insects and diseases. It is best to fertilize in the fall. In mid-latitudes, November is the best time while October works for northern latitudes. Selection of the fertilizer should also be done with care. Nitrogen shouldn’t be more than 10% in it or else it could prove to be harmful. Using organic fertilizer is recommended by the experts because they are low in chemicals and therefore healthier.

2- Choose the highest setting of your mower to mow the lawn, preferably 3 ½ or 4 inches. . Tall grass is an indication of healthy grass. Weed seeds can be shaded out in this manner and hence, prevent the sprouting of weeds. This is of the utmost importance because weeds can be dangerous for plants. They snatch nutrients from the plant’s body and also pave way for various diseases. Thus, it’s necessary to remove the weeds and keep the garden clean. The proliferation of soil microbes is encouraged in this way because it keeps the soil cooler and aids it in retaining moisture. Microbes are essential because they are responsible for converting nutrients of the soil into a form that’s used by the plants. Grass can also grow in bare spots in this manner. Deeper root penetration is also encouraged, which can be beneficial for drought resistance.

3- Avoid the use of fungicides, insecticides and pesticides. All these products can kill living things that enrich your soil, including earthworms, which aerate the soil and good microbes. Keep the grass healthy and it will not succumb to insects or diseases easily.

4- Do not over-water the grass during long dry spells. The leaves may turn a shade of brown during this period, but the heart of the plant that’s underground remains alive for months. Watering deeply, but not frequently is recommended for keeping the grass green. Instead of running the sprinkler for 10 minutes every day, it is best to do it for an hour once every week.

These simple steps can go a long way in maintaining the garden and without the need of expensive professional gardening services.
